We all create our own reality. Even the dogs do it. While I was walking my parents dog this rear sunny day in early April the four legged creature decided to see what it wanted to see. I took a lain that could have been rightly called Cat Lane if it wasn’t for the official name it already has. ‘Cat Lane’ is a notorious path to take if you own a dog. I know this; my parent’s dog knows it too. And so, her tail rises and her ears point forwards on entering it, all she’s after is a cat to chase. And this I where the magic happens and where objective truth becomes subjective truth, a reality created on its own. One who is as desperate as the dog to see what she wants to see will see it. Everything that moves automatically becomes the object desired. This sunny day an abandonment pot turned into a cat, and it didn’t even moved at all. The dog flung forward towards the round object that lay on an unusual spot beneath a bush. Only when she was close enough to see, close enough so that the real truth could no longer be ignored, she slowed down in speed and walked the other way. Her tail still high and her ears still too alert, showing me that she ignored the fact that she was fooled by her senses and her imagination. She seemed just as pleased with herself as if she had chased a real cat, not just the one she imagined there to be.
I sometimes imagine things, hoping they will be real one day, more real than the ‘cats’ on ‘Cat Lane’. Maybe it’s more of a dreaming or a wishing than an imagining. I wish I could travel the world in a VW van for example, making photo’s of the people, things and cultures I encounter and making a living out of blogging about it. Wouldn’t that be grant?! So far it’s just a dream, but this weekend I got a really nice surprise, making me aware of the fact that dreams might become true for I’m already appreciated in my blogging. Maybe not yet enough to make a living out of it, but it is a start. Storiesbyfrances nominated me for the Liebster Award, an award meant to discover new blogs and to support the small ones.
The rules are simple: answer 11 questions, give 11 random facts about yourself and nominate 11 blogs for the award that will answer 11 questions of your own. So here are the questions storiesbyfrances came up with for me to anwser:
1. If you could be any character from any book, who would you want to be and why?
If I may change the who into what I would be the popcorn in Daniel Handler’s Adverbs. Popcorn reminds me of the happy times spend with friends in dark cinema’s all over the world. It is delicious but turns into junk the moment it leaves the safety of its cheap carton container. It plays no major role in the book but is only mentioned briefly in a chapter on love in the cinema.
2. What´s the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you?
I can’t think of anything, so that might be a good or a bad thing…It might indicate that I don’t regret anything or that I don’t take any risks in life – I hope for the first explanation.
3. If you could be anywhere right now, where would you want to be?
I would be in a scruffy camper in a lonely Scandinavian forest in June. Just me and an old dog, eating roast chestnuts and reading books about people who lost their grip on reality. I’ve been to Scandinavian twice and it is a wonderful place. Camping in the forest is what I would like to do right now, which is funny because I’m more the city trip kind of person. If you ask me this question tomorrow I’m more likely to answer Honk Kong or San Francisco for example.
4. Who is the person you miss the most?
I don’t think I’ve ever missed anyone in my life. – Oii, this sounds quite uncongenial or even selfish. Maybe I should find someone to love…
5. What´s your favorite childhood memory and why?
It’s not my favorite (I don’t believe in favorites, or the best or the most wonderful or stuff like that) but it popped straight into my mind while reading this question. It was in the city of Prague. Me, my family and some close friends were wandering the streets, marveling at the sites. At one point we sat down somewhere for a late afternoon snack. I don’t remember what I ate but I do remember the vanilla sauce served with it. It was very yellowish and had lots of dark spots of the vanilla-pod. I also recall the tasteless whipped-cream that accompanied it. Different than in my own country they didn’t add sugar. It was one of those memorable first encounters with the ‘otherness’ of different cultures. It seemed very strange to the eight-year-old me that anyone could enjoy sugarless whipped-cream.
6. What would you like to write about, but have never muster enough courage to actually write about?
I would like to write about the people I meet, or even better, meet people because I’m going to write about them. How wonderful would that be! Another option would be to write a short story about a talking cat that gets granted with one wish and wishes itself to be purple – or something like that.
7. Who/what couldn´t you live without?
I couldn’t live without my camera. I take it with me everywhere I go and feel rather ‘pointless’ when it’s not by my side. I would like to expand the photo camera with a video option: to make videos of the everyday things I encounter, find beauty in the average and the taken-for-granted- kind of things.
8. Why did you start blogging?
I started blogging because I needed a place where I could express some of my ‘visual’ thoughts. I was also a little bored, spending too much time in my small room. I was stuck, not knowing what to do with my life other than going to lectures and seminars. It got me thinking and as a way to push away the walls that surrounded me I opened up a spot in the world by creating this blog.
9. What keeps you blogging?
Sharing is living. If I wouldn’t blog, the things I see and capture would only be stored onto my computer. Life is so much better when you share.
10. What´s a perfect day to you?
The perfect day is when nothing is written down yet when you wake up. All possibilities are open and you can do anything you want. It would be perfect if at the end of the day you feel very lucky with how things turned out. It typically includes friends and food and a little bit of sunshine.
11. What makes you laugh?
Bad cult cinema, like Army of Darkness (Sam Raimi, 1992) and Phantom of the Paradise (Brian de Palma, 1974) definitely makes me laugh. I have a rather bad taste 😉
Now then, eleven random facts about myself.
First: I like carrots when they’re raw, not when they’re cooked.
Second: I’ve never dyed my hair, except for one miserable highlighted hair lock when I was in my teens.
Third: I once had a dream about a train that drove through a tunnel completely made out of colorful old-timers. The whole thing unfortunately collapsed…even though it was only a dream it seemed very real.
Fourth: I want to live abroad, for a short period at the least.
Fifth: For the first twenty-one years of my life I would eat nothing else but dark chocolate spread on bread for breakfast, now I eat anything.
Sixth: I always take the stairs, never the escalator.
Seventh: As soon as my alarm sets I jump out of bed.
Eighth: I’ve never owned a hamster.
Ninth: I sometimes forget to brush my hair when I go out into the open – sorry world, my sincere apologies for making you look at my untamed manes.
Tenth: Pen + Paper = Doodle. I can’t help myself.
Eleventh: I like 80’s music.
The last part of the award is to nominate eleven other deserving bloggers and ask them eleven questions of my own. Trouble here is that I don’t read a lot of other blogs, not with below 300 followers that is, for the nominated bloggers should have less than 300 followers…
Instead I will give you a list of 11 bloggers I really enjoy, below 300 followers and above:
